Modulating Through The Life Space:

A Sonnet of Sonnets, by John Lewis Smith

Sonnet #14: Retirement

It feels like time to stop, so I retire.
Community of scholars had become
Obsessed with profit. I had no desire
To keep the rhythm of their kettledrum.
I said ‘Goodbye’ and played my farewell gig.
Then no more documents to read and write,
No classes to prepare. I felt a big
Release. The tension lifted overnight.
And how I love to potter and to dream.
Or, when I’m in the mood, to take a nap.
Contentedly Iím floating down the stream;
No longer have to listen to the crap.
My working life is over now, for sure.
It’s time for waking up, time to explore.
